COURSE OVERVIEW

This course aims to “change the course” by avoiding negative or blaming discourses around DEI and focusing on the educative value of understanding how to personally contribute to more inviting, equitable, and diverse campus communities.

While many student-oriented DEI programs focus on teaching critical concepts, Get Inclusive’s student DEI program de-emphasizes the teaching of terminology and the development of conceptual understanding, instead seeking to encourage and empower students to speak up for themselves and when necessary, to speak up on behalf of others.

Rather than prepare students to engage in debates related to social justice and/or systemic issues (something that will be covered in subsequent learning experiences for students), this course seeks first to establish a foundation of cultural competency and cultural humility that includes empathy-building, compassion, individual values mapping, bystander intervention skills, and self-care.

Nathan Harlan, Executive Director of the Office of Student Wellness at West Virginia University
“No two institutions are exactly alike, therefore the approach to online training can't be either.  Get Inclusive gets that and made the time to learn about WVU and become a partner rather than just a vendor.”
